Point Betsie Lighthouse

Be a Part of History at Point Betsie

There’s something for every member of the family at Point Betsie Lighthouse, Benzie County’s most revered historic attraction! From the restored lighthouse keeper’s residence to the 100-year-old Fourth Order Fresnel Lens, which safely guided ships into the treacherous Manitou Passage, Point Betsie Lighthouse tells the story of heroics and commitment along the water for over one-hundred years. Learn about the fragile Point Betsie dune ecosystem in an exhibit sponsored by The Nature Conservancy. Walk through the Boathouse Museum, next to the gift shop, to see an authentic U.S. Coast Guard rescue boat and other tools used by life-savers during earlier times. The Fog Signal Building once blasted its sound across the waves to guide ships even when fog hid the tower light’s beams. Climb to the top of the lighthouse tower where, if you envision the past, you might see a steam-powered freighter hauling a load of timber or grain to Chicago.

Located on the western most point of Lake Michigan’s eastern shore near Frankfort, Point Betsie was originally known as Point aux Bec Scies or sawed beak point which was named by the French after a common duck in the area in the 1850’s.  Long touted as one of the most picturesque lighthouses in the State, Point Betsie, still with an active light, is surrounded by spectacular views of the Manitou Islands, Sleeping Bear Dunes, and rolling dunes along the shoreline.

The Point Betsie Lighthouse was restored and is maintained thanks to Point Betsie Lighthouse Friends. Protecting this treasured 1858 beacon on the Lake Michigan shoreline from weather and age requires constant maintenance, and the many Point Betsie Lighthouse Friends keep this historic place alive.
