Slide into town as the country’s best professional ice carvers convene in downtown St. Joseph over the weekend (January 31- February 2) to create magical ice art with their chippers, chisels, and chainsaws. Experience many magical and mirthful moments watching individual and team ice carving competitions, participating in a wacky frozen fish toss, swaying to hip Hawaiian hula performances, striding along on a brisk 5K run.
Works of art begin to take shape on Friday evening during the Professional Individual Competition. Be there at 7:30 p.m. for the official kickoff at State and Pleasant Streets featuring the breathtaking “Tower of Fire and Ice” followed by a steamy Fire & Ice Party at Shadowland on Silver Beach including fire performers, a cash bar, tropical martini luge, pizza, live music, and more.
On Saturday, the excitement blasts off as the Professional Team Ice Carving Competitors create spectacular crystalline ice art, amazing to watch, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Start your day in perfect form at the 8th Annual Ice Fest 5K Chocolate Walk/Run with medals for the top three runners and walkers in each age group and chocolate goodies for all. Ice Wars begins from 4:30 – 6 p.m. as pro carvers duel it out in 15-minute bouts of ice-carving chaos! You get to be the judge for this event as the carvers go head-to-head to see who can create the most unique ice sculpture in the fastest time.
Keep the heart fire burning while participating in the frozen fish toss and ice bowling. Crown yourself “King or Queen” at the Magical Ice Throne at the corner of Pleasant and State Street (photos encouraged!). Experience the warmth at Waikiki Weekend at the Silver Beach Carousel with Hawaiian Luau performances (1:30 and 3:30 p.m. Saturday), and get everyone involved in a SnowBiz Scavenger Hunt all weekend long to search at over 40 locations for “logo” sculptures in and around downtown – the winner to receive a cool St. Joe Today gift certificate. Stop in at the St. Joseph Today Welcome Center to get a copy of the scavenger hunt form and to learn details. More information and great hotel packages are available by visiting www.stjoetoday.com.
