SAUGATUCK DUNES STATE PARK

Saugatuck Dunes has 13 miles of sandy hiking trails. The southern portion of the park is mostly made up of the dedicated natural area. Lake Michigan is not visible from the parking area. Visitors should come prepared to hike on sandy trails and over rolling terrain throughout the Park. The shortest path to the beach is .6 miles (one way) via the black-dotted line section of the Beach Trail, as shown on the map. Wear good shoes and bring your own water.

• Dogs must be kept on a 6-foot leash at all times and may not be left unattended
• Alcohol is permitted in the park for visitors age 21 and over
• No glass bottles or containers on beach
• No bicycles are allowed on any of the trails
• No camping at the park
• No fires on beach
• Fireworks prohibited

Trails are not groomed and vary widely in degree of difficulty.

Metal detecting is permitted in certain designated areas of the park. Metal detecting is recognized as a legitimate recreation activity when it is conducted in ways that do not damage the natural and cultural resources in Michigan State Parks nor violate applicable state statues. Any items found must be reviewed by park staff and may be retained for further investigation.

Possession of alcoholic beverages by minors is strictly prohibited. Despite the change in law, the use of marijuana in public is still not legal or allowed.

The Great Lakes are powerful bodies of water. DO NOT swim near or jump off break walls or navigational channel walls. Always pay attention to changing conditions and the beach flag warning system found in designated buoyed swim areas. Before heading out, visit Michigan.gov/BeachSafety.

Invasive insects and diseases have destroyed MILLIONS OF TREES in Michigan, often after hitching a ride on firewood. Purchase only certified heat-treated firewood at the park or nearby vendors. If you don’t use it all, don’t transport it or take it home with you. Campfires are permitted only in designated fire rings.
