Make History Come Alive!

Nestled along the shore of the Black River in the heart of South Haven’s maritime district, the Michigan Maritime Museum’s campus welcomes visitors to discover the history of Michigan’s Great Lakes and waterways. Explore multiple permanent and changing exhibits detailing the rich traditions of family boats, commercial fishing, and the United States Coast Guard. Sail into history aboard a whole fleet of vessels in the summer and learn the traditional skills that keep them afloat in the winter.

2023 marks the first full season of the newly opened Maritime Heritage Center. This state-of-the-art facility boasts a dedicated learning center, a Ship’s Store for all your souvenir needs, and many flexible-use event spaces for Museum and community events. In the brand-new exhibit Full Steam Ahead: The Golden Age of Great Lakes Passenger Steamships, climb aboard and explore a simulation of one of these luxurious vessels which once dominated the horizon and shoreline. You can stoke the boilers, navigate from the pilot house, and relax in the first-class salon! This season the museum is also highlighting ways in which people interact with waterfronts for water-dependent activity, commerce, and enjoyment.
