Local Bounty

Local Bounty

Buying fresh produce at U-pick farms, farmers markets and roadside stands is one of the best things to do while visiting West Michigan. Prime temperatures and excellent growing conditions help create quality blueberries, peaches, leafy greens and more to savor during your stay or to take back home to enjoy. Wonderful grapes are grown here, too, by award-winning vineyards, and local grains and hops are used to create noteworthy craft brews and spirits.

An outing at a U-Pick farm is wonderful for the entire family. Kids learn the principles of harvesting foods while picking their own strawberries, blueberries and other seasonal produce. You can be sure that they will remember this for years to come.

At roadside stands and farmers markets, you’ll also find other products made from Michigan’s best, like donuts, pies and coffee cakes, as well as homemade jellies and jams, BBQ sauces, honey, maple syrup, and spices. As you travel through rural farmland, enjoy the beauty and the hundreds of acres of crops in their various growing stages. Hopefully, you’ll be able to experience the luscious sweet corn during its prime picking season. Slathered in butter with a little bit of salt, it’s one of the best delights of the summertime!

West Michigan is the best place to eat local. Enjoy all the variety available from May through October, and the knowledge that you’re benefitting your body by eating “fresh from the farm.”
